V is for Vintage and Valentines Day

Posted on January 13th, 2010 by

If you create crafts or design scrapbooks, you’re probably aware of how big vintage clip art has become. And because Valentine’s Day is about a month away, vintage valentine clip art
is everywhere you turn right now.

The term vintage is actually pretty far-reaching when it comes to digital art. It
incorporates the Edwardian and Victorian eras, and all the way to
the mid-20th century, which is a fancy term for the 1940s and 1950s. Some of the Valentine’s Day art created during these eras is pretty spectacular. There are ornate motifs, sometimes embellished with gold ink an lavish colors. And on the other end of the scale you have the art from the 20th century, which is more simplistic, but what it lacks in flash it makes up for in warmth.

As for illustration subjects, there are, of course, valentine angels and cherubs, roses and many other kinds of flowers, big red hearts and other
symbols of ardor. But when it comes to the 20th century images, however, the images go off the beaten path. There are colorful socks, fried eggs, tea cups, bowls of popcorn and all kinds of other crazy images you wouldn’t expect. Those odd takes on the traditional vintage valentine art are what made that era so charming.
